A photographer who received the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport Elite for a year-long test drive might have initially focused on finding a new rooftop tent. The photographer had grown attached to the iKamper Skycamp DLX during a trip to Alaska, which was removed from a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser at iKamper’s Seattle showroom. The Passport TrailSport’s off-road capabilities offered an ideal platform for another rooftop tent adventure.

Tent Selection and Mounting Challenges

During the year since the Alaska trip, iKamper introduced a fourth-generation Skycamp in a more compact Trio size, suited to the Passport’s dimensions. While the cavernous size of the Skycamp DLX had been ideal for the Land Cruiser, the slightly more compact Trio seemed like a better option for the Passport’s narrower roof profile. Honda’s crossbars have a dynamic weight rating of 165 pounds, but the Skycamp 4.0 Trio with Comfort LT air mattress tips the scales at 146 pounds, leaving only a 19-pound buffer—a margin the photographer found too tight. The slight undersized weight difference raised concerns about long-term reliability during rugged terrain traversal.

JSport USA, which maintains a close working relationship with Honda and HRC (Honda’s racing division), provided a solution with its heavy-duty Plateau Roof Rack. The rack offers a dynamic capacity of 625 pounds and a static rating of 1,200 pounds. It not only safely supports the rooftop tent but also adds aggressive off-road styling to the Passport. As a one-stop shop for Passport, Ridgeline, Pilot, and CR-V off-road performance parts, JSport also offers heavy-duty skidplates, wheels, and plug-and-play auxiliary lighting to enhance trail readiness. Maybe you just saw that Honda decided to lift the 2027 Passport TrailSport, and you don’t want to be left behind on the trail.

Roof Rack Installation and Tent Setup

After mounting the rack, the photographer encountered an issue: the Skycamp 4.0 mounting brackets were too tall, causing them to rest on the roof instead of the crossbars. Adding 7/8-inch rubber spacers resolved the problem, allowing the tent to clamp securely without compromising structural integrity.
