GM Slashes Chevrolet Bolt Production by 75%, Ending Model Run in 2027
This represents a steep reduction from the previously anticipated 50,000 units, according to union officials.
The decision reflects GM’s long-standing plan to limit the Bolt’s market lifespan, though the company now expects production to conclude 18 months earlier than initially projected. The automaker has framed the model as a short-term offering since its introduction.
His assessment is based on current daily output levels at the facility.
GM has not disclosed exact production figures, instead stating it regularly assesses market conditions and consumer demand. The Bolt launched in early 2026 with a base price of $27,600, positioning it among the most budget-friendly electric vehicles available in the U.S. By late August, sales had reached 4,224 units, Reuters reported.

The vehicle features notable improvements over its predecessor, including an estimated range of 410 km and DC fast-charging capability up to 150 kW. As a 2027 model, it will also include a standard NACS charging port for compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
The production adjustment comes amid GM’s broader restructuring of its electric vehicle operations, particularly following the removal of the $7,500 federal purchase incentive in September 2025. The elimination of this subsidy led to a sharp decline in battery-electric vehicle sales nationwide.
Since the second quarter of 2025, GM has recorded $10.9 billion in restructuring charges tied to its EV business. While the company maintains production of about a dozen electric models, it has repeatedly scaled back expansion plans. The Kansas City assembly line, currently producing the Bolt, will transition to manufacturing the Chevrolet Equinox, previously built in Mexico, and the Buick Envision, currently produced in China. Both vehicles rely on internal combustion engines.
The reduced output will impact employment, as GM has delayed plans to reintroduce a second shift and placed nearly 1,000 workers on indefinite leave without pay. For perspective, Tesla sells roughly 35,000 Model Y vehicles in a single quarter, according to Reuters.
