The Lotus Emira range has become quite complicated, with new variants being introduced regularly. Currently, there are three different versions powered by Mercedes-AMG’s M139 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder: the 360bhp Turbo, the 400bhp Turbo SE, and the 416bhp 420 Sport.
These models come with an eight-speed dual-clutch auto. Additionally, the Emira can still be purchased with a 3.5-litre supercharged Toyota V6, available in SE guise with 400bhp and the option of a six-speed manual or auto.
420 Sport Specifications
The 420 Sport boasts increased power and torque, with 369lb ft, a 15lb ft increase over the Turbo SE. It can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 186mph, making it the quickest Emira variant and the fastest four-cylinder car in the world.
The 420 Sport features a new extended front splitter, rear lip spoiler, slatted rear windscreen, and louvres on the front arches. It also has larger air intakes, improving airflow to the radiators by up to 15%, and sits 5mm lower than the standard model.
Lotus has developed a Lightweight Handling Pack for the 420 Sport, which includes a titanium exhaust, a lighter lithium-ion battery, carbon fibre components, Michelin PS Cup 2 tyres, and Multimatic spool valve dampers. The pack also features optional 20-inch forged wheels.
Driving Experience
The 420 Sport is a delight to drive, with wonderfully feelsome steering and an incisive front end that can be tipped into corners. However, it’s not the best Emira for road driving due to its brutally stiff ride and constant jiggling over imperfections.

The engine, while lacking emotion, is still a powerful unit with broad reserves of torque and almost non-existent turbolag. The dual-clutch gearbox is also improved, with smoother shifts and more incentive to take control manually.
On the track, the 420 Sport really shines, with stiff damping that allows the car to attack kerbs without drama. It’s relentlessly composed on a circuit and has a sense of humour, especially in Race mode with the ESP slackened off.
Interior
The interior of the 420 Sport is a massive step up in quality and usability over past Loti, with a properly premium-feeling product. The detachable glass roof panel adds a delightful extra dimension, making the cabin brighter and airier.
Lotus is offering the 420 Sport with various options, including the aforementioned Lightweight Handling Pack. They have also introduced other tech-focused updates for their models.
It depends on your plans for the car. If you’re looking for a track-focused Emira, the 420 Sport is the best version yet. However, if you’ll be driving mainly on the road, the manual V6 version might be a better choice.
