Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced review: the series’ best

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is the best game in the series, and this remake makes it better. Ubisoft Singapore took the 2012 original and stripped away the elements that slowed the pacing, focusing entirely on the swashbuckling action that made the game a fan favorite. The result is a tighter, more immersive experience that leans heavily into its core fantasy of being a pirate in the Caribbean.

Removing the Corporate Glitch

The original release was frequently interrupted by modern-day sequences involving Desmond Miles and the Abstergo corporation. These sections often broke the immersion of the pirate fantasy. In this remake, those sequences are gone entirely. The corporate story is now relegated to data entries that players collect as icons in the world, solved by reading them in a menu.

The game also removed the infamous tailing missions, where players had to track targets from a distance before assassinating them. The stealth mechanics in the original were inconsistent, making these segments feel like slow, scripted animations rather than interactive gameplay. Resynced removes these sections entirely, prioritizing direct action over frustrating stealth segments.

There is a meta commentary to be found in this design choice. The new missions serve as data entries, and the rewards for completing them are in-game currency used to buy outfits and sails. This effectively highlights corporate greed, as players are essentially working for the corporation that is processing their memories.

Setting Sail

With the interruptions removed, the player is given much more space to enjoy the core activities. Setting sail on the Jackdaw offers a feeling of freedom and adventure. The seas look more dramatic, the ship is more detailed, and the crew sings sea shanties on command, creating a genuine atmosphere of life on the ocean.

The combat system has been updated to give players more agency. The reworked mechanics allow for a variety of attack types, making the player feel like a swashbuckling hero in a Hollywood classic.

While the approach is reductive, the result is a successful update. It captures the essence of the original game and amplifies it. The open world and the freedom of the sea are the true stars here, proving that the best version of this game is the one that leaves the corporate offices behind completely.
