Tesla has cancelled plans to sell its Cybertruck electric pickup in Australia and New Zealand, confirming that all deposits will be refunded. A letter sent to customers earlier today stated that production for these markets would not proceed, following a long wait for the vehicle to arrive. The automaker told local buyers that Full Self Driving (Supervised) would be available as a gift with future purchases of a Model 3 or Model Y.

Production Shifts to North America

Tesla removed the Cybertruck from its Australian website, signaling a halt to the project. The vehicle is produced only in left-hand drive and is not currently offered in right-hand drive markets. The pickup was revealed in the United States in late 2019, and Tesla Australia collected $150 deposits from interested buyers in November of that year. The reservation portal was closed in May 2022.

Local operations included importing a Cybertruck in 2024 and displaying it at Sydney’s Bondi Beach and other landmarks. Tesla held public events around the country to showcase the truck. At its annual shareholder meeting in 2024, CEO Elon Musk said production for markets beyond North America was a possibility for sometime in 2025. He argued that designing for international requirements would constrain the product.

Tesla has struggled to meet its sales targets for the Cybertruck since deliveries began in late 2023. Musk had predicted annual sales of 250,000, which could rise to 500,000. The best sales year in the US was 2024, with an estimated 38,965 units sold. That number dropped to 20,237 in 2025, and further declined in 2026. A significant price cut in February did not reverse the downward trend.

However, AUSEV imported 146 examples before Ford ended production, with the local project collapsing in March 2026 as supply dried up. The unsold right-hand drive F-150 Lightnings were subsequently offered through easyauto123, owned by Australia’s biggest automotive dealer group, Eagers. This cancellation of the Cybertruck follows the December 2025 global cancellation of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, which was unveiled in the US in 2021. Ford Australia did not offer the F-150 Lightning. The offer of a complimentary one-year FSD (Full Self Driving Supervised) subscription when ordering a new Model 3 or Model Y is valued at $1788, as the standard monthly rate is $149.
